Q: You have a very unorthodox fighting style. How much of that was taught, and how much is just instinct?
A: A lot of my fighting style is instant but when I was first introduced to boxing, I did what I thought was logical to me and taught myself a lot of things. It has become such second nature with my repetitiveness over the years that it has become instinctual.
Q: What are your long-term goals in boxing?
A: My long-term goals are to win a gold medal in the Olympics. After that I will take things from there. I would love for boxing to open up more doors for me.
Q: Do you have any desire to go pro?
A: I am not 100 percent sure I want to turn pro. I love boxing but I want to pursue other things in life like acting and stand-up comedy. My passion for boxing will make it hard to walk away and so will the potential of making millions of dollars. Ha!
Q: You’ve won every major tournament except for the Olympics, which you plan to compete in next year. What kind of pressure will the trials bring knowing that if you lose, you’ll have to wait another four years?
A: There isn’t much pressure on me because I believe in my heart I am one of the best fighters in the world and the best in our country: “CAmerica.”
Q: You do so many things outside the ring (stand-up comedy, motivational speaking, etc.). How do you manage all that while keeping a competitive edge against other athletes?
A: Boxing is done by many others while maintaining conventional 9 to 5 jobs. In between training while I rest, I like to write material and work on things to make sure I am never a one-dimensional person. Sometimes I have to sacrifice a nap from time to time, but I have a very flexible schedule.
Q: What made you decide to become a plant-based vegan?
A: I decided to become vegan after losing a bet. Bradley beat Pacquio and I had to do it for 28 days, and I felt the amazing difference. I kept it going and it has almost been three years now.
Q: How has your vegan diet affected your training?
A: I can manipulate my weight easily. I learned a lot about nutrition and my body, and I know what certain foods do and how to utilize it to become more efficient with my workouts. My recovery time is a lot better because the nutrients I gain from a plant-based diet is easier for my body to digest.
