Five months have passed since his bouts at Ringside. Mike is training hard to bring home a title this year but he’s also helping out others as an assistant boxing coach at Golds Gym. “I always had selfish ambitions in life but at Golds it’s all about helping others. I like helping that shy kid in the corner. To see his or her ability and confidence grow is special”.
Mike was that shy kid at one time who lacked self confidence so he understands them. He understand when you feel out of place and the fear of sticking out like a soar thumb. This is what makes Mike a good coach. He’s been there and has gone through that. Boxing gave Mike more than an opportunity to compete, it’s given him a peace of mind that he can accomplish things that as a kid seemed impossible. Now he can share that with these kids. “I wish I could have done this in High School but it’s always better late than never. Life takes it’s coarse and I’m just glad I’m able to do it even at the age of 60”.
Mike is one of the good guys in the sport of boxing. He truly embody’s what the sport is and why it’s called the sweet science. It’s not about money nor the fame and glory. It’s about the love for the sport and giving back. Boxing has made him a stronger person physically but more important, it’s made him stronger mentally. Helping some of these young kids learn the art of boxing is one thing but he also teaches them the sportsmanship that comes with boxing. The kids love him at the gym and it’s hard not to.
The ageing bull can’t wait for the 2009 Ringside World Championships to start but in the mean time, he’s happy getting ready and spending time at the gym he loves. “I want to do this for as long as I can. I’m having the time of my life”.
