The Greater Kansas City Golden Gloves Serving the Youth of Kansas City for nearly 75 Years!

 

WHAT IS THE KANSAS CITY GOLDEN GLOVES?

Coach Albert Guardado with Fidel Cervantes The Greater Kansas City Golden Gloves has been a youth development and juvenile delinquency prevention program in our community for nearly 75 years.   The Greater Kansas City Golden Gloves provides a worthwhile activity for youngsters to gain positive recognition, an essential work ethic, and an opportunity to showcase their athletic ability. The Greater Kansas City Golden Gloves has helped improve the lives of over 35 thousand youngsters during its celebrated history.

WHAT IS THE ORGANIZATION?

The Greater Kansas City Golden Gloves is made up of a core of volunteers from varied backgrounds from across the Kansas City area.  These volunteers are what make up our body of coaches, officials and administrators.
An important part of the organization is the 30 individual boxing clubs throughout the metropolitan area that serve our youth. .

HOW IS THE GREATER KANSAS CITY GOLDEN GLOVES FINANCED?

Our only stream of revenue is our regional tournament, which is held each year here in Kansas City.  These funds are used to send our Kansas City Team to the National Golden Gloves Tournament and to support the 30 boxing clubs in our community.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP?

There are many ways that you can help. The obvious is financially, either through our scholarship program or a direct donation to the overall program.  Other ways to help is to become a Golden Gloves Volunteer and become a certified coach, a judge or even a referee.  You could help by donating a facility to house a boxing club or just give us space in an existing business. The Golden Gloves has a rich history across this country and it is well recognized and respected as a leader in youth development.  Become a part of that.  Become a part of the Greater Kansas City Golden Gloves.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

The greater Kansas City Golden Gloves has a rich history at the national level with some twenty-six national champions.  In 1939 Chester Ellis, at 118 pounds, was Kansas City’s first National Champion.  In that same year Tony Novac was crowned champion in the heavyweight division. In those days there was only 8 weight divisions.  More current champions include Greg Suttington 1990, Randy Carver 1995,B.J. Flores 1997, Chad Aquino 2001 and Charles Ellis 2003.  Greg Suttington currently coaches at two gyms.  One in KCK and one in KCMO.
